I am a small, independent, and female minority owned street food vendor serving the Triangle area of North Carolina. My goal is to not only create opportunity for my family, but to also create opportunities for young high school and college students that need to make a decent wage to pay for schooling and other necessity items, but don’t have the flexibility of working full time to afford such things.
My intent is to grow this small business into multiple locations throughout NC and provide part-time employment opportunities at a full-time wage for young adults (or soon to be adults).
This goal was driven by the unfortunate experiences that I have witnessed both my niece and nephew go through over the last few years. They are still in high school, but have had a somewhat dramatic childhood. This lead their grandparents to take over and try to raise them as best as possible. However, their grandparents live on a very small and limited income, leading my niece and nephew to struggle in getting some of the things they need (and desire) to have. They have attempted to get jobs, but due to lack of transportation and given the time they get home from school, this has been quite difficult to achieve. Therefore, my siblings and I help them as much as we can each and every month to provide both financial and transportation support. However, this is not enough to sustain them financially and they desperately need to start learning the realities of adulthood that are soon to arrive on their doorstep.
After seeing the struggles my niece and nephew continuously encounter, the light bulb went off and it led me to the idea of starting a weekend only street food vending business. This idea would provide them the opportunities they needed to both earn money and go to school. The business primarily operates on weekends only so that it does not interfere with their schooling nor my full-time job, yet offers each of them an opportunity to earn close to a full-time time wage while working part-time hours.
My hope is that through public support and ongoing booked events, this business will not only succeed in helping my niece and nephew enhance their lives, but will also grow organically and fundamentally to provide for additional locations to be opened. This will help dramatically in creating the same opportunities and enhancements to many other young adults and students throughout NC.
